Alphabetical Sydney

Alphabetical Sydney Creative Lab: An interactive exhibition celebrating Sydney in all its diversity, from A to Z.  Sydney is brought to life in the book and encourages you to think about the magic of the city.

Suitable for children aged 3-8 years. The exhibition will run until 12th August 2018. Children under 5 are free. Adult $12 entry. The Museum is pram friendly, with pram parking on the ground floor next to the baby changing room. To visit the exhibition, take the lift up to the second floor.
We had the honour of meeting the author, Hilary Bell and the illustrator, Antonia Pesenti at the book signing on the opening day. Charlotte was delighted to discover her favourite ferry makes an appearance too.

Awaiting you at the door is a green and gold ferry and a delightful, red ice cream truck, both of which feature in the book. The idea is to let your imagination take over: explore, write and draw.

The Creative Lab is a special place which allows you to step into the book Alphabetical Sydney. This Lab is a result of the work of an extraordinarily skilled illustrator, Antonia Pesenti and an equally talented author Hilary Bell, who both worked to create this fantastic and quirky book. It takes the reader on a journey through Sydney, with the help of the Alphabet.

Visitors receive a souvenir Lab Kit with a fold out " Me Map", to encourage children to love writing about themselves and their surrounds. There are jars of bright colouring pencils provided on the table for children and adults to get creative. The Creative Lab is an amazing space for all children to practice learning in a fun and exciting way.

The reading corner, under a giant Mort Bay Fig, has books from ‘Here’, such as stories about Sydney, and ‘Elsewhere’ such as stories about the moon. Every detail in the Creative Lab has been carefully thought out. There are interactive items on the walls such as gum ball machines, iPads, and dress up. You can listen to the sounds of the streets in Parramatta.

Giant letters of the alphabet hang down from the ceiling, daring you to compose a poem. The rhyming in the book is impressive and forces you to think about how fascinating language can be.

Giant walls divide the room into a mini city. The eye-catching illustrations of the Harbour Bridge and Luna Park are highly detailed and graphic. The images support the story from start to finish, keeping an excellent balance between visual and text.

Don't Miss: Daily storytime at 10.30am. The exhibition hosts daily book reading under the canopy of the Moreton Bay fig tree.
