The world’s largest festival of light music and ideas, Vivid Sydney returns bigger, bolder and brighter in 2018, with the Opera House sails lighting up, installations at Barangaroo, the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, and The Rocks shining brightly from 6pm daily, we share our list of must-see FREE Vivid light installations.

Customs House

100 years ago, May Gibbs gave Australia two characters who dropped out of a gumtree and became instant superstars. Since then, pretty well every Australian child has grown up steeped in the adventures of the intrepid Gumnut Babies, the audacious Snugglepot and the demure Cuddlepie.

Join Snugglepot and Cuddlepie and their stalwart companions on their journey through the Australian Bush as they encounter the weird, the wonderful — and things quite unknown altogether.

A Day in the Light at Barangaroo

As the sun sets, Barangaroo’s waterfront becomes an illuminated promenade inspired by water, earth and fire. Welcoming you to the precinct is a giant luminescent puppet, breathtaking in size. Operated by a team of performers, the puppet ventures along the waterfront in a highly theatrical display of sound and light. Barangaroo glows under layers of light and sound that evoke the surrounding waterways. If you listen closely, you can hear the sounds of birds and the sea.

Royal Botanic Garden Sydney

Take your kids on an early evening walk through the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney and discover beautiful light installations set to impress all ages. Follow the winding, interactive pathway of Aqueous, and watch as the panels light up beneath your feet. Inspired by the native birds of Australia and New Zealand, gather around the excitable birds at Parrot Party and watch them burst into song and light! There are many more installations to discover in the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, including the glowing trees of the Nautilus Forest, and the rolling blue waves of He’e Nalu.

Sydney Opera House Sails

For the 10th Anniversary of Vivid Sydney, celebrated Australian Artist Jonathan Zawada will create a site-specific artwork that transforms the Sydney Opera House sails into a series of kinetic digital sculptures..

Circular Quay and the Rocks light up

Illuminosaurus is an amazing 3m-high dinosaur captured in a moment of fierce pursuit. Dinosaurs are the inspiration of myth and legend; their bones were often recorded as the remains of dragons and biblical giants. Their gargantuan size, arrays of teeth, claws and armoured plates sparked visions of fantastic creatures with supernatural abilities.

Revive the Reef lets you step into a magical underwater landscape and work with friends and strangers to unwind the pressures threatening the Reef. The Great Barrier Reef. It’s a natural treasure unlike any other place on earth. Beautiful, irreplaceable... under threat. When we see the pictures of bleached coral on our screens, it’s easy to feel like the problem is too big, and not see ourselves in the solution. Everyone's actions though - big and small - are vital to the Reef's future.

Lights for the Wild at Taronga Zoo

Lights for the Wild at Taronga Zoo, will return featuring giant animal light sculptures that wowed

Vivid 2017

Darling Harbour Fantastic Oceans

This "water fountain", light and laser experience celebrates an environment where bio-luminescent creatures live deep beneath the ocean. Water features come to life as jelly fish in a fantastic display of colour; special fountains emulate corals and deep-sea flora; lasers ripple like waves of the ocean or etch the silhouette of creatures from the deep. Moving-head lighting technologies emit bright beams of light skyward — like glistening shards of sunlight piercing the surface of this fantastic underwater world.

Luna Park

'Spirit of Fun' Luna Park will glow even more brightly between 25 May and 16 June. The promenade and fair rides of Sydney’s oldest amusement park will be filled with colourful lights. The iconic Ferris Wheel has also been fitted with hundreds of extra lights.
