Life with kids in Sydney City
Tea Room & Asian Fusion Restaurant
Luyu & YUM YUM is a beautiful addition to Newtown's restaurant scene. Lulu's journey began in childhood, growing up in the Houmen Mountains where he discovered his passion and love of tea. Luyu & YUM YUM is a culmination of the ancient art of tea making along with yum yum (dumplings).
One of our fellow KIDsize Living friends recommended we try Newtown's Luyu & YUM YUM, so we called to enquire about how kid friendly the restaurant is. Now, we did this for the following reason: our son is a monster (an adorable monster, but still a monster), who refuses to sit still at a restaurant. And yes, we have set the expectation of bringing an iPad. Which he now wants blaring while watching Spanish speaking adults unwrapping piles of Kinder Surprise eggs (note: my son does not speak Spanish, and the "rustle rustle" of opening a Kinder Surprise occasionally manifests in my nightmares).
When the lovely staff at Luyu & YUM YUM assured us the restaurant was kid friendly, offered hedgehog shaped dumplings and rainbow coloured ones, along with a 5.30pm opening time, we decided to give it a go (with a plan for a hasty exit if necessary).
Luyu & YUM YUM is above a shop front in Newtown. ;The only indication of the restaurant's existence was the bright sign and the classic r'n'b hits as we entered the hallway. ;We were greeted warmly and shown to our table where I promptly removed all chopsticks, cutlery, candles, menus & glasses (aka weapons for a 5 year old). ;The restaurant's fit out is exquisite; a long cocktail bar and open kitchen complemented by the warm lighting created an ambiance that was both classy yet comfortable. ;
For drinks, I had a ;White Leaf Chrysanthemum ;Flower Tea from He Nan, China. ;Hubby opted for one of the extensive cocktail options, a ;Mr Luyu’s Ice Tea - ;Absolut Wild Tea, Luyu Lychee Black Tea, Cointreau, Tequila & Absolut Citron (I drank most of it). ;The food came out really quickly and by 6pm we could see that the restaurant would be getting busy shortly. ;The staff were fantastic, engaging with our son and reassuring us that we should take our time. ;
The dumplings were a win with Mr 5 and were by far the most delicious morsels of dumpling goodness I've ever tried. We ordered;
