Life with kids in Sydney City
Designed especially for inquisitive under 5's and their carers, Kidspace is a dedicated 'mini-museum' that stimulates young children's imaginations and encourages them to explore the natural world.
There is a large enclosed educational play area on the second floor of the museum for under 5’s. It’s like a mini museum with 5 cubby house 'pods’ with fun activities for kids to explore. There's a bug pod, marine pod, volcano pod, observation pod and imagination pod all with real-life objects and relevant toys. Kids can examine other real-life objects and specimens like insects under a magnifying glass or looking at animal X-rays on a light table. There are soft toys, mats, reading areas and costumes to enjoy.
There is also a special enclosed baby-friendly space for crawlers which keeps babies safe and lets them play with some new toys. Staff are supervising but you need to stay with your kids. There is so much to keep them entertained so you will have a chance to sit down and relax.
The rest of level 2 houses animals and insects and lots of really cool interactive activities for older kids.
The Australian Museum Rooftop Cafe is located on the 4th floor and has an amazing view of the city and a kids menu.
Public transport - It’s easy to get to - 10 min walk from Museum, St James and Town Hall stations and buses (Sunday $2.50 rate for families). Please see here for more details
Parking: Special rates (3hrs-$12 & 4hrs-$16) for museum visitors at 77 Riley St car park… but remember to get your ticket validated before you leave the museum, or else you’ll have to send your wonderful husband all the way back up while you keep the baby entertained in the car park!
My 8 month old loved it and wouldn’t have noticed if I was even present until he got hungry. He made lots of new friends and even I had fun and learned a few things! All the kids were really enjoying themselves and were so interested in checking everything out. Lots of kids were dressed up in animal costumes from the imagination pod, so cute!
There is pram parking, baby changing facilities and bottle warming within this space so is a really fun, hassle free activity for the family!
